Abstract

This study has been designed to determine the changes in body compositions and fat distribution that occurred after menopause, by studying various body measurements in pre- and postmenopausal women. Women were taken from the gynacology clinics and subgrouped into premenopausal group (N = 500) and postmenopausal group (N = 500) of women, according to their time of cessation of menstruaton.
Various body anthropometric measurements were done including; height, weight, circumferences at; upper arm, chest, waist, buttocks and mid thigh regions, skinfold thicknesses at: biceps, triceps, subscapular and suprailiac regions, blood pressure, body mass index, % body fat, lean body mass and total body fat, together with upper arm anthropometry including upper arm circumference, upper arm muscle area and upper arm fat area. Following that, statistical analysis were done including: mean, standard deviation, correlation co-efficient and analysis of variance.
The results of the present study reported that, the post menopausal women had more mean values of weight, circimferences and adipose tissue measurements than the pre menopausel women.
Also, the present results showed that, the postmenopausal women had more mean values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure and more incidence of hypertension than the premenopausal women.
Conclusions:
1- The postmenopaural women were heavier and had more adipose tissue than the premenopausal women which may attributed to the sedintary life at this age.
2- The increased body weight in post menopausal women may be due to more accumulation of body fat that indicated by the increased mean values of skinfold thicknesses.
3- The increased body fat and consequently the increased body weight may be elevate the risks of cardio vascular diseases which indicated by elevated blood pressure and incidence of hypertension.
