Abstract

This study carried out as across sectional study, on 30 female patients suffering from infertility either primary or secondary infertility in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Suez Canal University in Ismailia.
All patients in the study had ahistory of infertility for at least one year of unprotected intercourse without pregnancy and all patients have no past history of tuberculosis infection, No symptoms suggestive of current tuberculosis infection, no history of tuberculosis in the family.
We excluded from the study all patients who are not clinically candidate for laparoscopy e.g.: patients with (cardiovascular diseases, Bowel obstruction, extensive surgery and multiple operations, etc…………).
All patients included in the study were submitted to the following:
1- Detailed history taking with focusing on: age, duration and type of infertility, menstrual history, past history of chest complaint or any symptoms suggestive of past or recent tuberculosis infection and history of tuberculosis in the family. (Appendix I).
2- Clinical examinations: Including general, abdominal and vaginal examinations to verify any contraindications for laparoscopy or hysteroscopy.
3- Routine preoperative investigations and other specific investigations as: Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, Hysterosalpingography, serum prolactin and mid-luteal serum progesterone.
4- Finally diagnostic laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and endometrial biopsy for histopathological evaluation.
In our study 26.7% of cases were normal wit both hysteroscopy and laparoscopy whereas the variety of abnormality were detected mainly with laparoscopy 73.3% in contrast to hysteroscopy 13.3% indicating that hysteroscopy and laparoscopy are complementary to each other.
Only one case in our study was accidentally discovered to have tuberculous endometritis as proved by histopathological evaluation and laparoscopy and it was surprising as the case has no past history of pulmonary tuberculosis, no symptoms, clinical, laboratory, or chest x ray findings suggestive of tuberculous infection.
