Abstract

The current study was conducted on 30 patients with endoscopically proven GERD. from patients suffering
from symptoms suggestive of GERD, we recruited 30 patients after detailed history taking, thorough clinical
examination, laboratory work up and upper endoscopy which confirmed the diagnosis of GERD. Ten healthy
volunteers were recruited after exclusion of GERD endoscopically. Recruited patients and healthy controls
were further subjected to esophageal manometry and 24 hours PH metry.
We tried to study the impact of some risk factors on the development of GERD. However we did not come across any significant relation between the studied risk factors and the occurrence of the disease.
There was a highly significant relation between the different grades of GERD diagnosed endoscopically according to the Los Angeles classification and the frequency of hiatus hernia, the higher the grade of GERD,the higher the frequency of hiatus hernia.
