Abstract The growth in numbers of people of age 65 and older is greater than that of the general population. Women are account for approximately 60% of all those age 65 and older, and 67% of those age 85 and older. Unfortunately, a high proportion of these women live alone; many are widows while others may never have married. This process has been described as the ”feminization of ageing”. The term “geripause” has been used to characterize a phase of reproductive aging that begins in the postmenopause, presenting a new set of endocrinologic, metabolic and physiologic modifications with an increase in age-related changes. The geripause is divided into both an early (65 to 85 years) and a late (older than age 85) stage. The current study aimed to evaluate postmenopausal symptoms among elderly women; it was conducted on 400 women with mean age of 68.7 years ± 4.65 SD. The relationship between menopausal status and symptoms vary across racial/ethnic groups, this is due to differences between populations studied as regard demographic characteristics e.g. age, marital status, cultural and racial factors. |
