summary
This Thesis is concerned with George Herbert Mead and his philosophical concepts . He is one of the representatives of this trend along with pierce , James , and Dewey . This research has not received much attention in spite of its importance . as Dewey and whitehead have considered Mead as one of the most important figures in the American history.
Mead has a prominent position among pragmatists, which requires explanation . Many western writers wrote about Mead, however agreat part of his philosophy is still in need for further illustration at least in the Arab World. Mead,s writings have received great attention from his students who collected these writings and classified them in the famous four books of Mead which proofs Mead,s position and importance in his age.
Undoubtedly Mead’s wide knowledge and mentality have made him understand the contemporary concepts and philosophies Particularly .Mead’s reading of kant’s philosophy enabled him to represent an objective criticism of other philosophies .
The different sides of mead’s philosophy have made him an example of the intellectual and philosopher who is aware of his role and cause in his country he has devoted himself to philosophy and gave it all his time and effort so that Some philosophers regard him as one of the strongest mentalities in the American society.
The importance of this study is due to three reasons .
First: Mead is one of the most important founders of pragmatism . Second: His philosophical thought does not only contribute to social philosophy but also contributes to time politics and history philosophy in addition to practical philosophy . Third : our libraries lack to some extent a specialized study that sheds light on the different aspects, of mead’s philosophy .
The present study is composed of six chapter in addition to an introduction and a conclusion :
Chapter one : Mead’s life and Works.
Chapter tow : social philosophy .
Chapter three : time philosophy .
Chapter fore : Morality , politics and freedom .
Chapter five : Mead’s Attitude to some philosophical Ideologies.
Chapter six : Mead in critics, Eyes .
Results:
1- pragmatism is the predominant feature of Mead’s philosophy.
2- Man, as a living organism, has a self and that self makes him an active organism.
3- Mead emphasize that the present is the basis of truth.
4- There is no separation between the individual and social dimensions of morality.
5- Mead and Buber emphasize that man is a social organism.
6- Mead sees self as a social one where as Husserl sees that self is outside the boundaries of society.
As for the methods of this research , the nature of the study requires a comparative, analytical method.
