Abstract

viscocanalostomy (VSC) considered as one of non-penetrating surgical techniques in glaucoma surgery which evolved in South Africa by Robert Stegmann that started this surgery in patients with primary open angle glaucoma to achieve effective glaucoma surgery with few complications .In this study, viscocanalostomy was evaluated as non penetrating surgical technique was done in 30 eyes of 25 patients with primary open angle glaucoma that were uncontrolled with maximally tolerated medical therapy and without previous surgical intervention before, this was done to be compared with other clinical studies that done worldwide. Results of the study revealed that, viscocanalostomy presents significant IOP reduction from the first postoperative day and up to six months with high percentage of complete success of the viscocanalostomy in reduction of IOP alone without need for any antiglaucomatous treatment. the complete success was 86.6 % of the eyes in the study while only 6.7% shown qualified success under the effect of a single betablocker eye DROP .viscocanalostomy presents high stability in the visual field that reflects astability of the optic nerve damage that already present with no further optic nerve damage. this excellent percentage in stability of the visual field six months after viscocanalostomy was most properly due to stable anterior chamber during and after the surgery in 86.6% of the cases so no sudden decompression of the globe occurs which could have a negative effect on the compromised retinal nerve fibres.
