Abstract

•Review what has been published about postpartum haemorrhage concerning etiology, diagnosis, prevention and management•Review the recent advances in the management of postpartum haemorrhage, e.g. use of misoprostol, the B-Lynch surgical technique and Hayman modifications for this technique, stepwise devascularisation and arterial embolotherapy.
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is defined as excessive blood loss per vagina more than 500 ml ;if occurring in the first 24 hours after delivery it is called primary PPH but if after 24 hours till the end of the purperium it is known as secondary PPH .
Postpartum hemorrhage is a major obstetric problem, it is the leading cause of maternal mortality in developing countries and still an important cause of maternal mortality in developed countries.
