Abstract Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem in both developed and developing countries due to inadequate diet containing vitamin D or inadequate exposure to ultraviolet light.Breast milk also is low in vitamin D and its metabolites. It is clear that the most important biochemical findings in this illness is hypocalcaemia. The calcium ion plays an important role in excitation contraction coupling in the cardiac muscle. Cardiac dysfunction occurs during acute reduction in serum calcium levels.Chronic hypocalcemia has also been associated with myocardiac dysfunction. Many studies suggested that the heart may be affected in vitamin D deficiency rickets especially in the third biochemical stage. Several clinical works have prop sed that vitamin D may also be beneficial to the cardiovascular system . In the current study, we aimed to evaluate cardiac functions in children with vitamin D deficiency rickets with or without hypocalcemia before and after treatment |
