Abstract

Carcinoma of the vulva is an uncommon malignancy accounting for 0.5% of all female cancers in the United States and 2% of all female genital malignancies. The predominant histologic type is squamous cell carcinoma, which accounts for about 90% of the tumors in most series. Melanoma is the second most common histologic type. Some of less common vulvar malignancies include Bartholin carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, verroceous carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, invasive Paget’s disease, and sarcoma.
Invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva is typically a disease of postmenopausal women. However, the age range is wide, and some data suggest an increasing incidence in younger women. This has been attributed to some extent to the Human Papilloma Virus. HPV does not appear to play a significant role in the epidemiology of invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva in older women, who frequently have coexistent lichen sclerosis.
