Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of three different techniques of neural blockade: intrathecal plenol in glycerin 5% trans-sacral phenol in saline 6% and trans-sacral cryo-therapy for S2, S3 and S4 roots; for the relief of bladder cancer pain.
In conclusion, we can say that, there is no an ideal procedure for the relief of cancer pain, but each method has its own advantages with its specific drawbacks. Every patient should be carefully evaluated and a suitable technique for pain relief is selected accordingly. The intrathecal chemical neurolysis is suitable for patients with ureterocutaneous shunt or in whom the bladder and bowel sphincters are out of function and in terminally ill patients. The transsacral chemical neurolysis is selected for the early cases and when the bladder and bowel sphincters are important to be saved. The transsacral cryo-neurolysis is suitable in the early cases with expected longer life span, but the patients should in a good health to withstand a several visits for repeated cryo-sessions.
Lastly, we can safely say that, all the three methods of pain relief are simple, cheap, give a satisfactory analgesia with a reasonable duration, and can be repeated when required. With experienced hands, they are free of complications, and if it occurs, it is usually transient, but it may be permanent.
