Abstract

SUMMARY
A total of 515 freshly dead chickens (broilers and
layers from both imported and native breeds) were collected from araes of Assiut and El-Wadi—El Gadid Governorates and subjected to post mortem examination which showed septicaemic picture with the history of NewCastle disease infection in some flocks. In other flocks coccidial infestation, unabsorped yolk sacs, variable forms of tumours, fatty liver and gout were observed in other flocks.
Double samples were taken from each bird, one from intestine and the other wos pooled samples of liver, heart and spleen whieb grinding and suspended in tryptose broth with acriflavine then refrigerated at 4 c for 3 — 4 days before culturing.
The bacteriological isolation and biochemical tests revealed 201 isolates suspected to be listeria monocytogenes. Serologieally by using tube agglutination test 170 strains of listeria were obtained. The intestinal specimens showed a little higher percentage of isolation (20%, 17.04%) when compared with the pooled samples (17.8%, 14.2%), from broilers and layers respectively.
A total of 150 serum samples were collected from a layer flock (previously listera was isolated from it during production season) to study the presence of listeria antibodies in healthy birds by using tube agglutination
test, we observed a comparatively high percent of positive cases against both types : I : 0 and : 0 in comparison with types 1 H and 4b H.
Experimental infection of 6 weeks old ege chicken by using 2 strains of listeria isolates, showed that the organism was pathogenic, gave mortality rate of 20% after intraperitoneal injection and appearance of some symptoms as depression, ruffling feather inappetenee and septicemia. In some infected and contact birds nervous symptoma appeared in the form of torticoflis. The P.M. ‘esions were congestion in internal organs, and brain, petecheal haemorrhages on the proventriculus and thigh muscles, distended gall bladder, pericarditis and airsacculitis. The contact birds showed general symptoms, pericarditis and airsaceulitis. Listeria could be reisolated from the experirnently infected birds.
Antibody titers against L. çflenes 3— weeks post — infection was 1 640 in infected birds and 1:320 in contact birds, while after 6 weeks the titer reached to 1 : 1280 in both infected and contact groups.
Haematological studies showed that listens causes anaemia, increase in leucocytic count and decrease in the percentage of protein serum blood and glucose serum blood.
