Abstract INTRODUCTION Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is grown extensively in the Northwestern Coast region (NWC) and the Nertheastern Coast region (NEe) Qf Egypt. The rainfall in either (~C) or (NEG) fluctuates in amount and distribution from one season to another. Also, the amount of rainfall differes from one ’Iocation to another i!leacb district. A.ccording to the lastest estimation, the area cropped to barley in 1991 season was in the vicinity of 350-400 thousands feddans in rain fed areas I(Nonh Coast) compured with 150 mousands teddans in the old and new reclaimed lands. ”’’’’ This in part could be responsible of the low produclivicy of the crop (2.J6 Ardeb/fed.)” when compared wtrh the produclivity of me same barley varieties grown in the Nile valley (12.48 AId ab/fcd .)•• Therefore, the need for seuing fertilization recommendations for barley grown in rainfed areas is indespeesible, Also, the searcb for the appropriate variety to be grown under such coadltions is am.important prerequisite. ”’.
