Abstract

SUMMARY
This work was carried out on adult healthy chickens, ducks and pigeons of both sexes. Twelve birds from each species were used for morphological studies and three for histological preparations.
The birds were anaesthetized with chloroform inhalation, bleed through the common carotid artery and fixed with 10% formalin.
The vertebral column was cleaned from the surrounding soft tissues. The above fixed specimens were decalcified and complete laminoctomy was carried out.
The morphometric studies which included: total length of the spinal cord and its different regions, length of the different segments, transverse and dorsoventral diameters and cross sectional area of each spinal cord segment as well as the C.S.A. of its GM. and the calculation of each segment volume showed the following:
— The spinal cord of the three examined birds occupied the whole length of the vertebral canal and extended for a short distance infront of the cranial border of the atlas. It included cervical, thoracic, lumbasacral and caudal regions.
— The cervical region formed nearly half of the whole length of the cord and was consisted of 15, 16, 13 segments in chiken, duck and pigeon, respectively. Each of the thoracic and lumbosacral regions conestituted nearly 20% of the whole length of the cord. The thoracic region was formed of 7 segments in chicken and pigeon and 9 segments in duck. But the lurnbosacral region included 14 segments in the three species.
The caudal region made nearly 10% of the total length of the spinal cord and conformed of 5 segments in chicken and pigeon and 7 segments in duck.
