Abstract

SUMMARY: The investigrtion includes the histological and hjst— ochemical sturucture of the tye1ids, nostrils, mandibular [lip, teat and anus of 20 healthy adult Egyptian buffaloes. The following observations warrant emphasis
1— The epidermis of the skin of the eyelid is relatively thin in both the superior and inferior eye1is and becomes thicker and heavily pigmented on the free margin between the cilia and the tarsal gland openings. Then it changes into stratified squwnous epitheliun noncornified which reflects on the pcE3terior margin and lines the lower 3 mm of the palpebral surface. The rest of the palpebral surface is lined with transitional epitheliun containing goblet cells. The distribution and activities of alkaline phosphor tase, aoid phosphatabe and sucolnic dehydrogenase were investigated and the results were discussed.
2— The nontrils of buffalo are covered externally by a relatively tou8h, hairy skin. The epierp4p is thin and the dennal papillae are few, ahprt and sirnp1. The skin of nostrils extends around the margin ftle nose where a gradual waning of hair follicles, apocrine sweat g.qads and aebaceou glands then disappeared completely at the enteranoe of the nasal vetibule. However, the epidermis increased in thickness around the naa1 margin, ectnds into each nostril and beoones the cutaneous nucous
