Abstract

SUMMARY
The present investigation was carried out to study the post-hatchary developmental changes in the ovary of chickens. The material employed for this perpuse was composed of 54 left ovaries from both Eayoumi and Dandarawl chickens. Sampling was carried out within the period from the 1st to the 180th day after hatching.
Both the shape and the size of the left ovary in both breeds was subjected to marked variations throughout the whole post-hatching period. In the early developmental stages the ovary was represented by a curved smooth ribbon- like structure. The ovary then presented some depressions which included the cortex only. On reaching the 15th day after hatching, the ovary was thrown into few Folds of various sizes. Vith the advancement of age these folds increased both in amount and size. The ovary of the Dandarawl chicken showed relatively smaller folds. Towards the age of sexual maturity, the ovary appeared as hunches or grabes due to the presence of some macro—follicles of various Sizes.
The wei ght of the ovary at the early stages of deveiop inent showed no marked difference in both breeds under investigation. However, the ovaries of the Fayoumi were markedly heavier than those of the Jandarawi chickens durIng the stages of 150th and 180th day after hatching.
