Abstract

This study was carried out during 1980-1981 at the
Poultry Experiment Station, Department of Animal
Production, Faculty of Agriculture Zagazig University,
Benhabranch.
Biochemical and radio immunological.assays were
perf ormed in the laboratories of the Radioimmunologyand
Biochemistry Unit, Nuclear Research Centre, Atomic Energy
Establishment.
The purpose of this study was:
1- Estimation of progesterone, thyroxine, triiodothyronine
levels and somebiochemical parameters in blood
serum of F~oumi and RhodeIsland Red l~1Dg pullets
during the time of egg formation.
2 - The variation in progesterone, thyroxine, triiodothyronine
levels and someblood serum parameters in
~ayoum1and BIR breeds due to the different clutch
size.
3 - The relationship between serum progesterone levels
and the thyro;Line, triiodothyronine, total protein,
albumin, globulin, calcium, inorganic phosphorus and
&”’t cholesterol levelslovulat:1.on time in J’ayoWDiand RIR
pullets.
- 135 -
The study was performed on 60 Fayoumi and 40 RIR
laying pullets from a flock of 500 chickens. hatched in
March 1980. exposed to natural day light and fed .AS lib.
well balanced diet along the experimental period.
The selected pullets were of different clutch size
and regular clutch sequences.
Time of oviposition was recorded for each pullets
to obtain the approximate time of ovulation. Time between
OViposition and ovulation was considered to be )0 minutes
Blood samples were collected from the wing vain.
usdng hepari..nized siringes at ovulation time 2 and 4 hours
after oVulation.-20 - 16 - 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 2 hra. before
the expected ovulation of the second ovum.
Radioimmunoassay-has been used for the determination
of the hormone levels in pullet s serum.
The obtained findings are sIlIDIoarized.1n the follOWings:
1 - ~!!’!!!!LE..2”28!!!!~!!!:
The serum progesterone level was 45 % higher in the
RIR breed than. in F~own1 ones. It ranges from 0.041 to
0.61 ng/ml and from 0.11 to 0.86 ng/ml for Feyoum1and RIR
breed. respectively.

- 136 -
Constant and gradual increase in serum progesterone
level was evident with the progress of time towards the
ovulation reaching its peak value at -4 hra for both
breeds and then decreased gradually there after.
As a function of breed serum progesterone level in
RIR was found to be higher than Fayoumibreed at s:ny
interval of estimation.
The progesterone level in RIR is correlated with the
clutch size, while in the Fay-oumit showeda fluctuating
pattern increased at 3 eggs and lowered minimal value at
5 eggs.
The serum total thyroxine and serum triiodothyronine
levels are higher in RIR than the corresponding mean values
in Fayoumiby 56.5 % and 12. J % for T4 and T) respectively.
The calculated T)fT 4 ratio was lower in the RIR breed than
the Fayoumi breed.
No consistent pattern was found for any of the formar
prameters with the progress of time towards ovulation,
also relatively high mean value for T4 was evident to -6
hra. prior to ovulation in both breed.
The Fayoumi hens lilio.ed a decreasing T4 values with
the increase in clutch size, while the RIRbreed showedan
increasing trend.

clutch size in RIR breed and is negatively corre1e.

Fe.youmibreed starting from clutch siZe 3 to 5 eggs with
relatively lower value for clutch size 2.
T

ratio in Fe.youmibreed are positivelY correlated
with the clutoh size and negatively correlated in RIR
breed.
An increasing trend for T3 waS shown in RIRbreed
as the progesterone level increase. whUe T4 fluctuate
with the increase of progesterone categories showing an
increasing followed by a decreasing trendS.
The obser\’ed increase in serum toteJ. protein and
serum eJ.bUJJrlnin laying pu1lets are hig)J.1ycorrelated
with the progesterone level during egg forua
tion

There is a slight increase in serum toteJ. protein
with the increese in clutch size in both Fe.youmiand RIR
breed. Similar trend wes noted in serum eJ.bUJJrlnin Fe.youmi
but not in the RIll.
Serwn globu1in showedno appearent trend in Fe.youmi
breed. while it is correlated with the clutch size in the
RIRbreed.
- 138 -
No considerable change 1n the A/G ratio was shown
with the ~crease in clutch size in both breed.
With the increase in serum progesterone there was an
increase in serum total protein, albumin and globulin
demonestrated by the two breeds. However, no considerable
changes were noted for A/G ratio.
As a function of egg formation intervals, serum
calcium level was at its maximumconcentration at -20 hra
before ovulation in Fayoumi breed and 0 hr. in RIR breed.
However, its lowest concentration was noted at +2 hours
after ovulation in both breeds. On the other hand
inorganic phosphorus showed its high level at -2 and -10
for RIR and Fayoumi respectively.
As far as the clutch size is conserned, calcium and
inorganic phosphorus levels increase in the large clutch
size, while CalIF ratio showed a decreasing trends.
Calcium does not follow the course of progesterone
as its values remain constant or fluctuate in a narrow
range with the increase of progesterone categories in RIR
and Fayoumi breeds respectively. However, phosphorus
content shewed a slight increasing trend.

- 139 -
The highest Ca/IP ratio values was attained at 0 and
-20 hours for Fayoumi and RIR respectively t while no
single low value was deducted from both breeds.
5 - S-e-r-u--m--c-h-o-l-e-s-t-e-r-o-l:
Serum cholesterol levels in Fayoumi exceeds those in
RIR breed, although the differences was statistically significants.
No consistent pattern was noted for serum cholesterol
in relation to the time of ovulation for both breeds.
A consistant gradual increasing ~rend was observed
with the increase of clutch size in Fayoumi hens, while
in RIR it begins at clutch size 3.
Cholesterol is positevely correlated to progesterone
categories in F8\Youmi breed and not in the RIR breed in
the lower progesteron categories.

Correlation coefficient values between serum progesterone
level at ovulation time and each of blood parameters
studied differed due to breed. While the correlation ~
coefficient showed significant (p <0.05) possitive values

between serum progesterone level and each of total prote~
and albumin in Fayoumi. correlation coefficient between
serum progesterone and each of thyrox~e, total protein,
albumin, globulin and inorganic phosphorus showed significant
(p < O.01) pOBs1tive values and significant
(p (0.01) negative value between progesterone and triiodothyronine
in Phode Island Red.
