SUMMARY
Yemen Arab Republic, as a developing country,
is interested in the role which has been played by
woman of rural areas in the development of thenew
society. This governmental main concern came as result
of the fact that woman in Arab Republic of Yemen
represents more than fifty percent of the whole
popu:lationof the republic. In addition the situation
is aggravated by thousands of men who emi.q rat.ed in
order to earn their living outside the country. This
situation necessarily emphasized the role played by
woman of rural areas in developing the society.
consequently, woman is considered as an effective,
important and positive factor in the economic and
social aspects of development.
The yemeni government encourages woman, in
general , and woman of rural areas, in particular, to
participate positively in the process of production
and agricultural development. As a matter of fact
agricultural sector in Arab Republic of Yemen occupies
an important.and well outstanding position among other
economic sectors of the economy. This came as a result
of its effective share participation in the National
Income. It also represents the sole and unique source
of work and production for more than 90 percent of the
whole population of Yamen.

In order to accomplish the main objectives of
this research, both quantitative and qualitative

research method while deduction was used as a
quantitative research method. F-test, Chi-square,
Analysis of variance. Regression and correlation.
percentages and Avarages were used in the statistical
analysis of this research.
Research saaple was taken from Taaz· and Ebb
governorates. This because it was found, according to
3
the census of the country carried out in 1986 , that in
these two mentioned governorates the highest the
highest percentages of Yemeni women working in
Agriculture. They represent about 40.17% of all women
working in agriculture according to 1986 Yemen
population census. There were some other reasons for
taking the research sample from Taaz and Ebb
governorates. These two governorates are.considered the
important ones in agriculture because of their good
climate and natural conditions. In these two
governorates, women are playing the most distinguished
and important activities in agricultrual activities. In
addition to the previous reasons for taking the
research sample from Taaz and Ebb, some other reasons
are also important. Agricultural labor forces are ainly
woman majority. emigration in these two governorates
was very high. The researcher herself has had a very
good experience in working with the people there for
about four years as a research assistant, Department of
program Evaluation, Southern Mountain project. This
experience provided the researcher with good background
concerning the existing traditions and norms there.
The main variables used in this research
were: age, education, maritual status, agricultural
land ownership, ten agricultural procedures to study
woman’s participation in plant production including:
4
1 and preparation, cultivation process, crop services,
harvest, packaging, and some variables related to
woman I S participation in animal production animal
husbandry, animal milking) in the presence and absence
of family man. The relationship between the degree of
womanI s participation in agricultural production and
some economic, personal, and social factors was
studied. The relationship between the degree of woman’s
participation in the previously mentioned plant
agricultural procedures and size of land, income ( in
the presencel non presence of family man) was also
studied in this research.
It was found that the highest degree of
woman’s participation in plant production was in crop
harvesting. In animal husbandry and milking, it was
found that woman’s degree of participation was low in
the presene of family man(66.7%l, while it was higher
in his absence (85.7%). It was found also, from the
results obtained from this research, that there is a
relationship between the degree of woman’s participation
in plant production procedures and each of size of land
ownership, and income( in the presence/absence of
family man).
