Abstract

Two consequent field experiments were conducted in Abou-Rawash Sanitary Station farm 26 Km Cairo-Alexandria _ Desert Road, Giza Gevernorate. The soil was classified as ’Entisols Psamment’. The soil was treated with 4 rates of sludge (0,2.5; 5; 10%) enriched with 3 levels of lime (0, 2.5; 5%) on weight basis. These treatments were applied before planting both wheat and corn plants. The design of the experiments was in split plots (4m x 4 m), and 2m apart. Three replicates were used. Data were statistically analyzed.
The aim of the work was to study the effect of sludge application rates and its lime addition on soil physical and chemical characteristics, plant growth and nutrients uptake. Data obtained refer that:
Increasing sludge rate and its lime content decreased soil bulk density and increased its total porosity relative to the control. Soil moisture content at WHC, FC, WP and AW increased linearly with increasing sludge rate. Water content at the parameters mentioned above in soil treated with limed sludge exceeded that in soil treated with the unlimed one. Negative significant correlation was found between HC and/or IR frpm one side and sludge rate and its lime content from the other side. Concerning aggregation index the correlation mentioned above became positive. Soil resistance increased with depth. It decreased with increasing sludge rate. Sludge lime content effect on soil resistance was positive relative to the control up to the depth of 10 cm. Within the depth of 5 - 20 cm the soil resistance increased with increasing the lime content 0 - 2.5 % then it decreased again. The maximum significant and minimum yields (2040, 945 Kg fed-1) for wheat and (2929; 2068 Kg fed-1) for corn were obtained with 10% sludge enriched with 2.5% lime and the control, respectively. Water use efficiency and seed index took a trend similar to that of the yield. Increasing sludge rate and its lime content have a positive significant effect (5%) on soil EC, OM and CEC. Concerning soil pH slight effect was noticed. Increasing lime rate decreased Co, Ni and Pb uptake and their transfer coefficient. On the other hand, increasing the lime of sludge decreased the above mentioned parameters.
