Abstract 95 Summary The present study consists of four parts. The first part of experiments was conducted at the Experimental Farm of Plant Res. Dept, Nucl. Res. Center, Inshas during three successive growing seasons (2001 /2002,2002/2003 and 2003/2004) to evaluate the selected lupin mutants for earliness and yield and its components characters in M3, M4 and M5 generations. The second part was conducted at the laboratories of plant Res. Dept .,Nud . Res. center, Inshas during three generations to evaluate the induced mutants for seed quality traits The third one was conducted at the unite of stored product insects, Radiobiology Dept, Nucl. Res. Center, Inshas, during three generations M3, M4 and M5 to evaluate the induced mutants especially ones with low alkaloid content to infestation by two insects i.e. Callosobruchus chinensis and Heliothis armigera. The fourth part was to study the correlation between yield and its components, alkaloid and Protein content and the susceptibility of these mutants to infestation by Callosobruchus chinensis and Heliothis armigera. 96 The induced mutants were selected from irradiated M2 populations with gamma ray doses 0, 300 , 400 and 500 Gy and the treated M2 populations with EMS concentrations 0 , 0.1 , 0.2 and OJ Some promising mutant lines (23 mutants) as well as the two local cultivars (Giza 1 and Giza2) were evaluated in M3 , M4 and M5 generations. In each generation, complete randomized block design with three replications was performed to detect the performance of these mutant lines. - The results of this study could be summarized as follows:- 1)The analysis of variance for different studied characters showed highly significant differences among different lupin genotypes in the three generations (M3, M4 and M5), except for number of seeds / plant trait in M3 generation and weight of 100 - seed weight trait in M4 generation which indicated insignificant differences among lupin genotypes. 2) For flowering date, the mean performance ofM3 revealed that earliness was observed for mutant lines 5 , 11 , 17 , 19 , 21 and 22 as compared with the two local cultivars Giza 1 , and Giza 2 with maximum value of 19 days earlier than Giza2. 97 For M4 generation, earliness was also noticed for mutant lines 5 , 11 , 17,21 and 22 as compared with the two local cultivars. However, for M5 generation, earliness was only obtained for mutant lines 5 and 21 only as compared with the two local cultivars. Paradoxically, most mutant lines showed lateness as compared with the two local cultivars in the three generations M3, M4 and M5 with maximum value of 9 days delayed than that of Giza2. 3) For number of pods/plant, the mean performance of the three generations (M3 ,M4 and M5), indicated, that highly significant increase for this trait was obtained for mutant lines 8 , 15 and 19 as compared with the two local cultivars, However, most mutant lines showed marked increase for this trait as compared with Gizal in the three generations (M3,M4 and M5). 4) For number of seeds/plant, the mean performance for the three generations (M3, M4 and M5) showed that a considerable increase for this trait was noticed for different mutant lines as compared with Giza!. However, marked increase for this trait was only obtained for mutant lines 8 and 15 as compared with Giza2 in the three generations. 5) For 100- seed weight, most mutant lines showed significant increase for seed index as compared with Giza 1 in M3 and M5 generations. However for M4 generation, a considerable increase for seed index was only observed for mutant lines 6, 12, 15 and 18 as compared with Giza 1 whereas, in 98 comparison with Giza2, marked increase for this trait was obtained for 6,7,9, [2,14,15,16,18,20 and 21 in M3. However, markable increase for this trait was only obtained for Mut6 ant Mutl2 in M4 generation. But significant increase for seed index was only obtained for mutant lines 12, 17 and 21 in M5 generation. 6) For seed yield / plant, the mean performance showed that a considerable increase fur seed yield / plant was obtained for mutant lines 1,4,7,8,15 and 19 as compared with the two local cultivars in the three generations M3, M4 and M5. 7) For alkaloid content the mean performance showed that highly significant decrease for alkaloid content was obtained for mutant lines 20 and 23 as compared with the two local cultivars in the three generations. However, insignificant reduction was noticed for most mutants as compared with Giza 2. also, insignificant decrease was noticed for mutant lines 1 , 5 and 11 as compared with Giza 1. 8) For protein content, the mean performance showed that except for mutant lines 1, 5 and 11, all mutant lines and Giza2 showed marked increase for protein content as compared with Gizal in the three generations M3 ,M4 and M5. However, the increase in protein content did not reach the level of significance for most mutant lines as compared with Giza 2 in M3 and M5 generations, but, a considerable increase in seed protein content was obtained for mutant lines 4,8, 10, 14, 17, 20 and 23 as compared with Giza2 in M4 generation. 99 9) For infestation by C. chinenses, the mean performance showed that, except of mutants 1, 5 and 11,most mutant lines showed significant increase for infestation percentage as compared with the two local cultivars Gizal and Giza2 in the three generations (M3, M4 and M5) suggesting that Mud, MutS and Mut 11 were less infestation, however, mutant lines 6, 9, 12, 15 and 21 were moderate infestated, while most mutant lines were susceptible for infestation. 10) For infestation by H.armigera, the mean performance showed that the lowest infestation by H. armigera was obtained for Mud, Mut5, Mud 1 and local variety Gizal in M3 and M5 generations as compared with other mutants which showed significant infestation for this insect. However in M4 generation, no infestation was only obtained for Gizal and Mut5 as compared with other mutants which showed marked infestation. 11) For total infestation by the two insects, (C. chinenses and H. armiger), the meanperformanceshowedthat lowinfestationby the two stored products insects for Mud, Gizal and Mutl l as compared with other mutant lines and Giza2 that showed significant infestation by the two insects in M3 and M5 generations. However,in M4generation,the low infestationwas obtained for Mut4 and Mutl 0 as compared with other mutant lines and the two local cultivarsGizal and Giza2 100 12) For loss percentage, except of mutant lines 1,5 and 11, different mutants showed higher loss percentage than that of the local cultivars Giza 1 and Giza2 in the two generations M4 and MS. 13) For correlation studies, in the three generations, alkaloid content showed high negative correlation with protein content, infestation by C. chinensis, H armigera and total infestation by the two insects. Protein content showed high positive correlation with infestation by C. chinensis, H armigera and total infestation with the two insects, No. of pods/plant and lOO-seedweight. Also high positive correlation was observed between yield/plant and number of pods/plant. |
