المستخلص Man relays for a great deal in his survival on the environment around him and its natural resources. This reliance depends much on the extent of man’s understanding, control and utilizing natural resources m the right way in parallel with conservation, maintainance and reduction of pollution. Pollution then is one of crucial issues emerged recently suppressing all environmental aspects appearing as if it is the one and only factor. As agricultural extension one of the most important nonformal educailional systems covering the countryside that can play a distinguished role in creating awareness about Environmental Conservation Legislations (ECL) in its way to attain desired changes in rural peoples knowledge, skills and attitudes. Agricultural Extension’s role is no more limited to increasing crop yielding, but exceeds that to many other fields including the developing, maintaining and rational use of natural resources. Among the activities included in this last field, rational utilization of agricultural wastes, launch awareness compaigen targeting rural households to respect and in force laws, regulations, polices and other legislations drown by the government to keep rural environmental pollution down. In the light of the scaricity of studies in communicating awareness about EeL, and coping with the Ministery of Agricultural and Land Reclamation’s policy that assigned communicating awareness about EeL to the Agricultural Extension system, this 2 study was conducted to identify the role of agricultural extension in communicating ECL awareness through determining village Extension workers’ (VEW) knowledge degree concerning ECL, define the main variables affecting this knowledge and its contribution ratio, and to identify the reasons behind home and farm wasts wrong disposal. Hence, this study was conducted aiming to : 1-Identify VEW s knowledge degree about ECL. 2- Identify Agricultural Extension’s role in communicating ECL awareness in Qualubia Governorate. 3- Define the relationship between VEWs knowledge degree about ECL and some personal, social, economic and communicational variables. 4-Determine the relationship between the degree of accomplishment of Agric. Exten. Role in communicating ECL awareness to rural households and some personal, social, economic and communicational variables. 5- Define contribution ratio of the variables significantly correlated with YEW s knowledge degree about EeL in explaining the total vanance. 6- Define contribution ratio of the variables significantly correlated with the role of Agric. Exten. in cammunicating EeL awareness to rural households in explaining the total variance. 7- Identify the reasons drive rural people to follow wrong disposal practices of home and farm wasts from the viewpoint ofVEWs. 3 8- Identify YEW s suggestions to communicate euvironmental awareness to rural people concerning ECL in Qualubia Governorate. The study covered all districts of Qualubia Governorate ( i.e., Banha, Toukh, Qualub, Kafr Shokr, Shibeen EI-Qanater, EI-Qanater El-Khairia and EI-Khanka). A random sample representing 66% of the total YEWs in each district amounting to 132 YEW. Data were collected during November and. December 1998 by interviewing respondents using a pre-tested questionnaire. Parsons, simple correlation coefficient, Step wise, percentages and means were used to analyze data statistically. The main results of the study revealed that: 1-YEW s knowledge degree about ECL were either moderate or relativily high. 2-Agricultural Extension’s role in communicating ECL awareness was relativily high. 3- YEW s knowledge degree concerning ECL correlated positivily and significantly on 0.01 with each of information sources degree and respondents educational degree. The two variables contributed by 8.880/0 and 6.880/0 respectively totaling 15.760/0 in explaining the variance in the knowledge degree. 4- The role of agric. Exten. in communicating ECL awareness correlated positivity and significantly on 0.05 with each of the respondent’s exposure to mass media and his job satisfaction. The two variables contributed by 4.400/0 and 2.760/0 sequentially totaling 7.16% in explaining the total varience in the role’s degree. 4 5-VEW s reported that the main reasons driving rural people to follow home and farm wasts wrong disposal practices were unavailability of healthy sewage in the village, unavailability of junk yards, quick and easy ways of disposal are not known, and the lack of extension programs to aknowledge correct ways to benefit from home and farm wasts or correctly dispose it . 6- The main suggestions drown by VEW s to spread environmental awareness were: to held extension meetings to make rural people (villagers) acquianted with EeL, to give more concern to radio and ,TV programs targeting this field, and the provision of extension bulletins supported by EeL . |
