Summary
Food security is one of the main goals of Agricultural development as it is a very important problem facing the world in general and the developing countries (including Egypt) in particular.
The problem has arisen as a result of pressing increase of population accompanied by the raising consumption awareness, which have led to higher demand for food causing a food gap. Scientists have pointed out that filling this gap in Egypt should
follow both vertical and horizontal expansion in agriculture.
Due to differences between the nature of the new territories and the old ones concerning agricultural practices and techniques which do not necessarily agree with those techniques fanners used in the old territories, and considering the variety of farmer categories with their different experiences, the new territories require further agricultural extension in the field of improving the agricultural process of grapes. This can be achieved by providing the farmers of these territories with the suitable research recommendations through extension planning programs which can help them adopt these recommendations, apply them and identify the most important problems and their suggestions to solve them.
Grapes are considered one of the most important horticultural crops for local consumption as well as for export. They are also suitable for new territories. Yet grapes plantations in these territories suffer from noticeable decrease and variance of the main yield per feddan in addition to insufficient quality
A
level that makes export so difficult. This can be referred to the insufficient knowledge and skills and the unfavorable attitudes of farmers , the ineffective role of the agricultural extension ,and the few extension studies that focus on the role of the agricultural extension in the new territories.
The aims of this study are to:
1.Identify farmers’ knowledge of technical recommendations regarding the improvement of agricultural processes of grapes (APG).
2.Identify farmers’ practices of technical recommendations regarding the improvement of agricultural processes of grapes (APG).
3.Identify the role of agricultural extension in providing farmers with the technical recommendations regarding the improvement of the agricultural processes of grapes.
4.Determine the relationship between the farmers’ knowledge degree regarding (APG) and some personal, social and economical variables.
5.Define the contribution ratio of the personal, social, and economical variables correlated significantly with respondents’ knowledge degree regarding (APG) in explaining the total variance of this knowledge.
6.Determine the relationship between the farmers’ practice degree regarding (APG) and some personal, social, and economical variables.
7.Define the contribution ratio of the personal, social, and economic variables correlated significantly with
respondent’s practices degree regarding (APG) in explaining the total variance of their practices.
8. Identify the most important problems facing grapes
farmers in the field of improving the agricultural
processes and their suggestions to solve these problems.
The study took place in EL-Bostan district of ELNUBARIA zone where four villages were selected. A random sample of 124 farmers was selected representing 50% of total farmers in the selected villages whose number amounts to 246: 69 from Mohammad Refaat village, 18 from Abd Elmoneim Riad village , 19 from Elghazaly village and 18 from Elhussein village respectively. Data were collected by personally interviewing respondents using a pre-tested questionnaire which was composed of two parts. The first part was for measuring independent variables. The second part includes three measurements: one is to determine the degree of farmers’ knowledge, another to determine the source of their knowledge regarding (AGP), and a third to recognize their practices of (AGP). Pearson’s product moment, step wise, percentages and mains were used to analyze data statically.
The main results of the study revealed that :
I. farmers’ knowledge degree regarding most (APG) were relatively high
2.Fanners’ practice degrees regarding most (APG) were relatively high.
3.sources of farmers’ information about (APG) were numerous:
a. Extension organization sources related to the ministry of agriculture and land reclamation
b.non-governmental sources (private extension, past experiences ,and family and neighbors)
c.agricultural extension as a source of information in each process was found to be:
d.the first in biological control, irrigation and fertilization, and the third in three processes(raising, support and services). This indicates a remarkable decline in the role of agricultural extension in diffusion the technical recommendations of grapes production in the new territories.
4.farmers’ knowledge degree regarding (APG)was significantly and positively correlated at 0.01 level with each of the main yield per feddan, the degree of farmers’ attitude towards innovations and the degree of Service Content 0.01 level with the educational years’ number. All these variables contributed with 40.8 % in explaining the total variants in farmers’ knowledge, the rate of these variables’ contribution was 29.3 %, 6.0 %, 5.5 % sequentially
5.Farmers’ practices degree regarding (APG)was significantly and positively correlated at 0.01 level with each of the main yield per feddan, the degree of farmers’ attitude towards innovations and the degree of Serves Content. These three variables contributed with 25.7 % in explaining the total variants in farmers’ practices, the rate of these variables’ contribution was 17.6 %, 4.5 %.,3.6 % sequentially
6.Twenty problems facing farmers were mentioned rating between 61.2 % regarding knowledge decrease in the
biological control process and 5.8 % concerning rising of the employment charging.
7. The suggestions agreed upon by most farmers in the study are put in a descending order as follows: making filed visits, diffusion newsletters, expanding extension fields, organizing extension meetings, making TV programs, the farmer ’s visits to the extension official in his office, and making radio programs.
Some applicable results can be drawn from the study as follows:
1-Extension program planners and executives should consider providing grapes farmers in the new territories with (APG) recommendations that they are still in need of in the study area and the like.
2-Governmental organizations of ministries, other than that of agriculture, which are interested in agricultural activity, horizontal expansion and export, should extend their activities to include the new areas. Because the study results indicate no role for these organizations there.
3-Responsible Organizations should be Aware of giving the Graduate youth Lands to the Agricultural Graduate.
