BSIRACT
In steel tructures, alarge unmoor of structural elements are berun-cohunns,
i.e, they Me subjected to axial force and bending moment, A cohunn may undergo
flexural buckling. torsional buckling, torsional-flexural buckling, 01’ lccal btl kling
according to the boundary conditions and geometrical properties of die cross-section.
On IJ1e other hand, a beam element may undergo lareral-torsional buckling. IOCRl
buckling. or distorsional buckling depending 00 its boundary conditions and the
geometrical propertiesof the cro -section.

Buckling of strut purlins will be tudied b}’ finite element method. Individual
buckling III de will be monitored for purlin und r axial load. flexural lIplin. and
axial load as well as flexural uplift, Factors affecting rnemberslrengtli will 00
studied. onrributiou of deck or sheeting in restraining SIT\I[ purlins against different
buckling modes is COil ide-red ill finite elerueut mode-Is. Effect of tie rods on member
xial lind flexural strength is Also investigated. Results of mute eleuiem analysis will
be compared to available design methods of the different codes of practice such as
AI I. alUl Eurocodes.
In this research finite element eigen value analysis and non-lineal’ elastoplastic
analysis win be urilized 10 investigate the buckling behavior of cohnuns,
be!1]J’IS, ami beam-column elements. Theeigeu value analysis will be employed to
esrimate the rilie. I buckling loads. while rhe non-linear elasto-pla lie ;Ult1t is will be
\1 ed 10 estanate the 111tinate resistance of these elements, Result of fillite elemeut
analysis will be verified and compared with the results of the design codes, AmI by
experimental results available in literatures.
