Abstract

The study of the interaction of the electromagnetic field with nuclei has proved very fruitful for the elucidation of many details of nuclear structure.
from the study of y-ray transitions. much has been learned about finer details of nuclear structure. These studies have, on the one hand, given support to same aspects of the single particle model and have, on the other hand, specially for the giant resonance cases, shown the need for further developments, such as to the collective or unified nuclear model.
Experimentally, the giant resonance shows some regular features. The position of the absorption cross - section of the giant resonance depends on the number of nucleons in the nucleus. Also. The giant resonance for light nuclei shows complex fine structure.
Theoretically, the particle - hole (1P - 1h) formalism of the shell model has become, inspite of its limitation, a powerfull tool in the study of the giant resonance.
