Abstract

Many phytochemicals found in natural dietary agents including fruits, vegetables, and spices have been shown to suppress cancers by targeting tumor angiogenesis. This study was carried out to investigate the effect of resveratrol or curcumin alone or in combination with carboplatin on tumor development and survival in Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC)-bearing Swiss albino mice. Their anti-angiogenic effect was studied by evaluating MVD. The levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in plasma and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR -2) in tumor tissue were measured as a possible mechanism through which these agents achieved their anti-angiogenic effects.
These data show that resveratrol and curcumin produced antitumorigenic and antiangiogenic effects on EAC solid tumor in Swiss mice. Their effect tended to be enhanced after combination with carboplatin. Their antiangiogenic effect proved to be through inhibition of VEGF and its receptor VEGFR 2. These results suggest the beneficial role of the phytochemicals as adjuvants to chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer.
