Abstract

Geriatrics was defined (from the Greek geras = ageing and iatrike = medicine) as the branch of medicine that deals with the problems of old age and aging, including the clinical problems of senescence and senility (Arpa et al., 1992). Depression is a common mental health problem among elderly persons. In the general population, about 10–15% of elderly persons suffer from depressive symptoms (Kraaij et al., 2002). Depressive disorders impair health-related quality of life but the effect is not confined to major depression; it occurs also in mixed depressive/anxiety disorders, panic disorder, and “sub threshold” disorders, in which symptoms of depression and anxiety are present but insufficient to be classified as definite disorders that sub threshold disorders are associated with increased costs (Creed et al., 2002).
The aim of this work is to assess the prevalence of depression among geriatrics living in geriatric homes versus those living in home with their families in Beni Suef city.
Specific Objectives:
1. To estimate the prevalence of depression in elderly in Beni Suef city living in geriatric homes and to compare between this group and those who live with their families.
2. To detect the underlying risk factors of depression.
3. To provide recommendations for high quality management program.
Cross sectional Descriptive Study: Conducted in three geriatric homes and one geriatric club in Beni Suef city. It included 145 elderly from geriatric homes and geriatric clubs (living with their families).
A pre-designed questionnaire assessing age, gender, marital status, educational, medical disorders, Geriatric Depression Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale and Facing Daily Stressful Live Events Scale. Appropriate statistical analysis was applied.
The risk of depression among elderly living in geriatric homes were higher (89.7%) compared to those in geriatric clubs (56.7%). Chronic medical conditions are increased risk of depression among elderly. Depression has high prevalence among elderly females than elderly males. No significant difference between depressed males and females regarding total score of geriatric depressive scales, total of facing daily stressful live events scales and total of life satisfaction scale.
from the present study results, it can be concluded that the risk of depression had a multiple etiological factors among elderly in Beni Suef city such as age, place, gender, marital status, educational level, medical disorders and life styles so it is concluded that: training of care providers in the primary health care should include approaches for risk factors of depression, assessment of depression among elderly and providing services in a friendly manner. Geriatric depression assessment, guidance and support for any psychological and medical problem are priority services for elderly.
