Abstract This study presents a proposal to calculate effective length factor of column in a steel gabled frame with tapered members. When studying frame two cases should be studied frame with hinged supports and frame with fixed supports it is found that buckling mode is symmetric so only one-half of the frame can be studied and in order to express tapering structure must be modeled with number of members and joints where each member has constant inertia. A computer program based on the stiffness method is developed for this work using MATLAB. Stability function is taken into consideration to modify the stiffness matrix, this program is created to calculate buckling factor for two cases frame with hinged base and frame with fixed base. Solved examples presented in previous work were used to verify results obtained using MA TLAB program. Results obtained using AISC charts were presented in all possible cases and compared with results obtained in previous work and results obtained using MA TLAB program. |
