Abstract

The development of cross-sectional imaging has had a tremendous impact on the diagnosis and treatment of acute abdomen .In particular, computed tomography (CT) has gained widespread acceptance as a reliable and highly accurate modality in the evaluation of affected patients .The introduction of helical CT technology, with advances in contrast dynamics and high-resolution volumetric data acquisition, has further enhanced the utility of CT in abdominal imaging .Many traditional emergency imaging procedures have been replaced with newer helical CT techniques that can be performed in less time and with greater accuracy, less patient discomfort, and decreased cost. The speed of helical technology permits CT examination of seriously ill patients in the emergency department, as well as patients who might not have been taken to CT previously because of the length of examinations of the past. Higher quality CT examinations result from decreased respiratory misregistration, enhanced intravenous contrast material opacification of vascular structures and parenchymal organs, greater flexibility in image reconstruction, and improved multi-planar and three dimensional reformations. These applications enhanced the role of CT diagnosis of acute conditions of the abdomen, such as abdominal trauma, urinary stones; appendicitis; diverticulitis; and abdominal aortic aneurysms .Helical CT is a rapid and efficient mean of evaluating patients with acute abdominal pain. Attention to proper technique and protocol is essential for optimizing the CT examination and maximizing the diagnostic accuracy.Helical CT is the imaging modality of choice for patient triage, and many hospitals now have helical CT scanners on-site in the emergency department. Undoubtedly, the need for conventional radiology has diminished due to the increasing utility of helical CT in abdominal imaging .Unfortunately some causes of acute abdominal pain were not encountered through out the period of our study such as perforated peptic ulcer. In brief, we can say that helical CT of the abdomen is now becoming the modality of choice for diagnosing various causes of acute abdominal pain. The main disadvantages of this examination are the use of contrast media, and radiation exposure which had decreased markedly with after using the helical CT machines.
