Abstract
SRMP had a sensitivity to MPM of 84% and specificity approaching 100% compared with other lung tumors or pleural diseases and specificity over 80% compared with other peoples who had been exposed to asbestos . SMRP may be helpful in monitoring patient response to therapy. Mesothelin alone has a limited role in the diagnosis of mesothelioma as it is present in many other tumors. It is present in most epithelioid mesothelioms, but it is negative in sarcomatoid subtypes. Combining serum CEA and SMRP can help in distinguishing between non small cell carcinoma and mesothelioma more accurately. and by its use, pathological examination could potentially be avoided in the majority of cases.
Therapeutic options, of malignant pleural mesothelioma ,are chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery ,multimodality therapy and Palliative treatment. Other therapeutic options include photodynamic therapy, gene therapy, immunotherapy, and vaccination .
Multimodality therapy appears to be the most successful for management of potentially resectable disease. It is likely that biological markers will improve accuracy in staging and prognosis and with new treatment based on better understanding of the biology of the disease, there is cautious optimism for the future for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma .
