Abstract

This study has high-lighted the need for routine urine analysis and culture especially in high- risk newborns and to monitor the prevalence of UTI early in life. Also routine ultrasonographic screening should be done in all newborns with UTI. Thus, save the newborns and prevent the risk of complications which may end in renal scarring and renal failure.Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common problem in the new born . UTI is defined as a significant bacteriuria irrespective of site of infection in the urinary tract. Usually urinary tract infection in the neonatal period manifests after 72 hours of life. Incidence is between 0.1 to 10% in low birth weight infants. It is more frequent in male and preterm newborn infants , and may be as high as 10% in low birth weight infants the incidence of UTI is directly proportional to the presents of several risk factors for this disease . Among the risk factors, are the presence of associated infectious diseases (sepsis, bronchopneumonia septic arthritis osteomylitis, meningitis, etc.) the use of broad –spectrum antibiotics, mechanical ventilation, parenteral nutrition, intravascular catheter, and prolonged stay in the intensive care unit . renal and urinary tract malformations may be present in neonates with a urinary tract infection . in infants , the clinical presentations of UTI various from non specific sign and symptom such as poor weight gain , vomiting fever , poor feeding ,and jaundice to sever illness .
