Abstract

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most common benign neoplasm in men (Kirby and Shabbir et al, 2005). Although it is not a life-threatening condition, BPH can significantly affect quality of life (Shabbir and Mumtaz et al, 2004). More than 70% of men aged more than 70 years have a histological evidence of BPH, the incidence increases with increasing age (Kirby, 2003).
Seftel A, et al, (2007) studied physician perceptions of sexual dysfunction related to BPH symptoms and sexual side effects related to BPH medications, they suggested that physicians are underestimating the prevalence of sexual dysfunction (SO) in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS).
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is prevalent, bothersome and misdiagnosed in patients consulting urologists for benign prostatic syndrome, and is accompanied by a profound impact on the quality of life. Apparently, even during a urological consultation many ED-patients are hesitant to actively ask for treatment. Sexual issues should become key considerations for physicians managing patients with LUTS, especially since effective and well established oral treatment for ED is available (Hoesl CE et ai, 2005).
Sak SC et ai, (2004) confirmed that a significant proportion of men with LUTS have SO. The relationship is complex and differs according to the type of SO. Rosen RC et ai, (2006) concluded that LUTSIBPH is an independent risk factor for sexual dysfunction in aging men. Further studies are needed to define the mechanism( s) underlying the link between LUTSIBPHand male sexual dysfunction.
