Abstract

The aim of the essay is to evaluate the in vitro cultivation of medically important protozoa, highlighting on their application as a diagnostic & therapeutic tool. In vitro cultivation of protozoan parasites involves highly complex procedures. The primary aim of in vitro culture is to produce artificial conditions under which the life cycle of the parasite can be entirely completed outside the host under controlled conditions. Physico-chemical conditions in man are complex, And it might be expected that in vitro culture of protozoa would prove to be difficult. Several and methods and media are widely used for the establishment and maintenance of the following organisms in culture: entamoeba histolytica, giardia, trichomonas vaginalis, blastocystis hominis, balantidium coli, toxoplasma gondii, cryptosporidium and microsporidia species, leishmania species can be obtained using in vitro culture but to a lesser extent.
