Abstract Blast furnace slag is a by-product obtained from manufacture of pig – iron. This makes some problems in the pollution of the area of the Steel Iron Company, Helwan, Egypt. Therefore the utilization of this waste product in the production of any product saves money and prevents the pollution of the atmosphere. Alkali Activated Slag (AAS) is a binder which can be used as a substituent for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) due to its ability on solving most problems of (OPC). Alkali Activated Slag can be prepared by the activation of granulated slag by an activator. In this work the activation of granulated slag occurs by using NaOH at different percents such as 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt % and cured in both humidity and under tap water. A comparative study for the physico-mechanical properties in the two curing media was investigated. The results revealed that curing in humidity (100% RH) is better than under tap water due to there is no leaching of some materials. Also, the activation of granulated slag with NaOH + silica fume was investigated. This activation gives better physico-mechanical properties than that activated only with NaOH. The cement pastes activated with NaOH + silica fume is more durable in sea water than the other activated samples. |
