Abstract

A new method for electropolymerization of phenol was introduced in which the electrolytic cell works as a reactor for production of polyphenol, by using (NaCI or NH4CI) as supporting electrolyte and using either graphite or PbIPb02 rods as the working electrode. During the process the polymer is precipitated in the cell. It was found that using NaCl gives higher polymeric yield and molecular weight than using NH4Cl.
The characteristics of the produced polymer were investigated using FTIR spectroscopy, X-rays diffraction, elemental analysis, and thermal analysis. The thermal analysis (DT A and TGA analysis in nitrogen atmosphere) illustrated that the thermal stability of the produced polymer greatly depends on the average molecular weight which is affected by the e1cctropolymerization conditions.
Upon studying the various parameters of phenol electropolymerization it was found that the average molecular weight of the produced polymer has a very wide range due to the complex mechanisms of the reactions which greatly affect the growth of the polymer chains. The maximum molecular weight (365000 gig mol) was obtained at 150 g NaCl/l and current density 60 rnAlcm2. It was found that increasing reaction time, current density, or reaction temperature causes increase of the polymeric yield percentage. Also increasing NaCl concentration up to 150 gIl increases the polymeric yield. However, any increase above this value decreased the polymeric yield. Increasing stirring rate from zero to 500 IpIIl causes increase of the polymeric yield from 71.2 to 95.73%. On the other hand above 500 rpm a slight decrease of the yield was observed.
