Abstract

Dysfunctional voiding may result in various lower urinary tract symptoms, Including storage symptoms (frequency, urgency and urge incontinence) and emptying symptoms (decreased force of stream, hesitancy, need to strain and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying). It may also be responsible for recurrent urinary tract infections, acute or chronic urinary retention, and in severe cases upper and lower urinary tract decompensation .
Urinary incontinence (UI) is a widespread condition in general population affecting 19 % of the female and 10 % of the male population above 60 years old . Its prevalence increases exponentially as the population becomes older and more care dependent .
Using a structured questionnaire ensures that all domains of lower urinary tract symptoms are covered, allowing changes in the symptoms patterns, and severity over time to be identified, So that Arabic version of urogenital distress inventory 6 items (UDI-6) is a valid and robust instrument and a reliable method to use in daily practice and clinical research for Arabic women with LUTS.
Two thousands and four hundreds and ninteen middle aged females who were attending to Benha university hospital and hospitals in Qalubyia governorate for urological and non urological consultation and other volunteers from Qalubyia governorate were invited to participate in this study after informed written consent from them and approval from the ethical committee of Benha faculty of medicine. Among them, only two thousands participated in the study.
This study was conducted as personal based survey for evaluation of the study group at the period from August 2009 to June 2010. All females were classified into 3 groups according to age:
The first group aging from 20 to 30 years old.
The second group aging from 31 to 40 years old.
The third group aging from 41 to 50 years old.
All patients will be subjected to the Arabic version of short form of urogenital distress inventory 6 items (UDI-6) through face to face interview by the same resident and then non suitable volunteers were excluded.
The study group was recuted from females attending to Benha university hospital and hospitals in Qalubyia governorate for urological and non urological consultation and other volunteers.
Data were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed to determine the prevalence of different forms of voiding dysfunction in the study group in our country according to each item of the UDI-6 items questionnaire.
Stress urinary incontinence was the most common feature of voiding dysfunction in the age group ranging from 40 to 50 years old (17.2%), and its prevalence gradually increases with age.
Urge incontinence prevalence increases with age as it reaches 7.9% in the age group more than 40 years old.
Frequency of urination prevalence increases gradually with age from 4.7% in the age group from 20 to 30 years old to 5.5% in the age group from 31 to 40 years old to 6.39% in the age group from 41 to 50 years old.
Pain in the lower abdominal or genital area prevalence to some extent isn’t significantly different between all groups, it is 10.2% in the age group from 20 to 30 years old, 10.5% in the age group from 31 to 40 years old and 9.9% in the age group from 41 to 50 years old.
