Abstract NOTES involves passing an optical fiber system through a natural orifice such as the mouth, anus, vagina or urethra to help exision of superficial lesions, mucosal resection, F.B extraction or stone extraction from the biliary tract. Also passing the scope through the wall of the organs either the stomach rectum vagina or urinary bladder to gain access to internal organs in the peritoneal cavity for surgical manipulation. NOTES is an emerging experimental alternative to conventional surgery that eliminates abdominal incisions and incision-related complications by combining endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques to diagnose and treat abdominal pathology. Thus, NOTES facilitates surgery in the abdomen without incisions, thereby potentially avoiding incision- related complications such as postoperative pain, postoperative adhesions, wound infections and incisional hernias. But, there are a complications associated with NOTES. While general complications include those associated with the risks of sedation, analgesia, pneumoperitoneum and infection, specific complications include those associated with instrumentation. Even after possible precaution is taken, complications may arise in some patients and the endoscopist should have clear knowledge of their management. In the future, many operations that are done by an open surgical approach can be done by NOTES procedure. |
