Abstract SUMMARY l..Sixty water amp1eo from Mahmodia Canal and its tributaries running through Behera and Alexandria. Governorates were examined bacteriologically in order to evaluate its sanitary quality. 2. It has been found that overall mean of bacterial density at 37°C was 871038 ± 100163 bacteria per ml of wat er, 3 The mean value of the most probable numbers of coliform baci11i per 100 ml of water samples was 21719 ± 3130 bacteria. 4. The mean value of faecE]srtrept00000i count in iViabmodia Canal and its tributaries was found to be 5027 ± 696 bacteria per 100 ml of water. 5, A higher extent of pollution was detected in the northern section of the canal running through Alexandria Province (21,17 ‘) than the southern part and its tributaries ound in Behera Province (56 lan) as evidenced by the mean values of total viable count at 37°C (1176293 ± 18.3343 and 652299 + 2.3.4478 bacteria per ml repectively the most probable numbers of colifozt bacteria (29236 ± |
