The patient’s most fundamental needs are for high quality and complete safety. Meeting these expectations demands knowledge, skills, and continuous vigilance. All of these demand a culture of safety and quality at all levels of the system, a culture that supports these needs not just in word, but in deeds and actions.
The specialty of anesthesiology is a leader in the development of patient safety approaches within its discipline. Anesthesia providers can contribute significantly to achieve these goals by participating fully in the systematic approach, as well as by building highly reliable systems within their department or group.
The importance of good teamwork and communication is now more widely recognized in healthcare, especially in anesthesia, demonstrating the value of teamwork for successfully preventing and managing critical situations.
Following Standards and Practice Guidelines are widely accepted as a critical component for safety and reliability.
Preoperative assessment and planning involves evaluation of the patient and development of the anesthesia plan that includes the anesthetic technique, the requirements for monitoring, and the plans for postoperative care, all of which must be consistent with the wishes of the patient and the needs of the surgeon to improve patient safety, outcomes, and Satisfaction, as well as it reduces patient risk and the morbidity of surgery.
There must be a system of implementing the routine checking of anesthetic machines by trained staff according to the checklist which represents an important aspect of patient safety.
Failure to monitor the patient adequately is an important contributor to anesthesia adverse events so; the safe practitioner should follow the standards promulgated by the ASA.
Infection Control practices should be a routine part of anesthetic practice.
To practice electrical safety it is important for the anesthesiologist to understand the basic principles of electricity and be aware of how electrical accidents can occur.
Only through heightened awareness, continuing education, and communication can the legs of the fire triad be kept apart and the risk of an OR fire minimized.
The PACU medical director must ensure the PACU environment is as safe as possible for both patients and staff.
