Abstract

This study was carried out in Experimental and Researches Unit of Animal Production in Tokh Tanbisha, in the middle Nile Delta, Egypt, which belong to Faculty of Agriculture, Minufiya University. Data were collected from the records of Friesian herd during the period from the years 1995 to 2004. At present, knowledge is limited about field recording of body
weight and carcass traits in Egypt and its estimates of genetic and
phenotypic parameters. This study estimated genetic and phenotypic
parameters of body weight and carcass traits of field data and studied
possibilities for genetic improvement of traits under study by selection
index method in different combinations of selection criterion under study
by using different two methods to derived economic values.
Using these data of early growth to help producers, veterinarians,
and animal scientists to identify poor growth performance early as
possible as neonatal life. Such criteria provide the basis for tools to
improve economic performance.
Further evaluation of normal growth patterns of Friesian calves,
identification of environmental and genetic factors and their effect on
performance of beef that will allow for establishment of standards of
performance to assess performance in production units.
The aim of this study was to:
1) Estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters of body weights
and carcass traits under study in Friesian male calves.
2) Study sires as a random effect and non-genetic factors as a fixed
effects that affecting body weights and carcass traits under study in
Friesian male calves.
