المستخلص

Magnesium alloys are lightweight materials with moderate mechanical properties but their corrosion resistance is very low compared with aluminum alloys. In the present work, diffusion bonding of the magnesium alloy AZ31 with commercial pure aluminum by Hot Isostatic Pressing is studied.
The phase analysis resulted in the formation of two equilibrium phases namely; Mg17Al12 and Mg2Al3 in the diffusion layer. The microhardness profile showed that these phases are hard to cause brittle fracture. The fracture occurs in Mg2Al3 (the phase close to Al).
The experimental investigation has revealed a good bond quality due to the effective mutual diffusion of Mg and Al that was reflected on the shear strength of the joint. The growth kinetics of the diffusion layers were verified by the theoretical equations and experimental results. It was revealed that the growth kinetics obeyed a parabolic equation of the 2nd order.
Keywords: diffusion bonding, hot pressing, intermetallic compounds, cladding, coating, corrosion, magnesium alloys.
