Recently, low quality water is considered to be used in agriculture expansion, where the shortage of water resources in many regions all over the world, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Therefore, the objectives of this study are: (i) to evaluate the effects of the salinity level and salt type of irrigation water on the availability of soil K and Mg as macronutrients as well as soil Zn and Cu as micronutrients, (ii) to estimate the effects of salinity level and salt type of irrigation water on the uptake of these nutrients by barley plants, and (iii) to predict the effects of salinity level and salt type of irrigation water on the solubility and speciation of Zn and Cu in soil solution of the saturated soil paste extracts were also studied.
To fulfil the above-mentioned objectives, three pot experiments were conducted using two types of soils (a sandy loam soil and a silty loam soil). In the first experiment (2004/2005 season) three types of irrigation water were used. Each type of irrigation water contained a NaCl, Na2S04 or Na2CO) salt at two salinity levels (20 and 40 mmol/L) as well as the control treatment (fresh water). In the second and the third experiments (2005/2006 season), the same irrigation water treatments were applied on a native as well as 4.00 ppm Zn or Cu treated sandy loam and silty loam soils. In these experiments, barley (Giza 123) seeds were sown in the pots. The plants were started to be irrigated with saline water treatments were started after 27 days in the sandy loam soil and after 31 days in the silty loam soil. The irrigation with saline water was applied every 8 to 9 days in the sandy loam soil with a total of 7 irrigations and every 10 to 11 days in the silty loam soil with a total of 5 irrigations. After 85 days from planting, the plants each pot were harvested.
