Abstract

The present study was carried out to investigate the effect of stress on the SMG of albino rats both at the light and electron microscopic levels. Forty-five male albino rats were used and were randomly and unevenly divided into four groups, one control group of fifteen rats and three equal experimental groups, each compromised ten rats. Group I (control group): Rats of this group were not exposed to any type of stress. Group II (stress group) Animals within this group were subjected to three different types of successive stress namely; immobilization, flashed light and forced swimming, each for ten days. Group III (20-day recoverv group): Rats in this group were exposed to succeeding stresses similar to group II. Then, they were left for a recovery period of twenty days, before being sacrificed. Group IV PO-day recoverv group): Animals in this group were exposed to consecutive stresses similar to group II. Then, they were left thirty days to recover before being sacrificed. For analysis of serum corticosterone, at the end of each’ experimental period, blood samples were taken, early in the morning, from the tail of all rats in each experimental group together with their five-control counterpart. Then, rats of each group were euthanazed, together with their five-control counterpart, by cervical dislocation. The SMGs of each animal were dissected carefully.
