Abstract Blastocystis hominis is a common protozoan which belongs to subphylum Sporozoa and is found in the human intestinal tract. B. hominis is commonly found in humans all over the world but is particularly more prevalent in developing countries than in developed countries. The mode of transmission of this organism is by the faeco-oral route, also water-borne and zoonotic transmission has been suggested. There was controversy about the pathogenecity of B. hominis, although many recent reports consider B.hominis as an intestinal pathogen. Infection with B.hominis causes diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, anorexia, nausea and vomiting in both immune-competent and immune-compromised individuals. |
