V. SUMMARY Two field experiments were conducted at the Agriculture Exp. farm of Al-Azhar Univ. at Assiut during seasons, 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 to study the effect of three population densities (66, 33 and 22 plants/m2) and different phosphorus fertilizer rates (15.5, 31, and 46.5 kg P2O5 /fed. in the form of calcium super phosphate 15.5% P2O5) on three faba bean cultivars, (Misr-1, Giza-429 and Giza-40). Seed were sown on 27th Oct., and 3rd Nov., in 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 seasons, respectively.
*The summary of data obtained as follows:
A- The growth characters:
1- The data reveal that plants of Misr-1 and Giza-40 cultivars was superior in leaves dry weight, leaf area and leaf area index in almost plant ages, the plants of Giza429 were superior in leaves dry weight, leaf area and leaf area index only at plant age of 60 days in 2006/2007 season.
2- The data show that leaves dry weight, leaf area and leaf area index were significantly increased by increasing phosphorus rates from 15.5 to 31 or 46.5 kg P2O5/fed. at plant ages 60, 75, 90 days in both seasons. While, leaves dry weight was significantly affected by phosphorus rates only at plant age of 45 days in 2006/2007 season only. While, leaf area and leaf area index was no significantly affected by phosphorus rates at plant age of 45 days in both seasons. In general the highest values of all traits were obtained when phosphorus was applied at rate of 46.5 kg P2O5/fed., at all plant ages in both seasons.
3- Plant population of 22 plants /m2 gave significant increase in leaves dry weight and leaf area at all plant ages in both seasons, while, plant population
