Abstract

This work was performed to study the histological structure ofboth types of human sweat glands and investigate the localization ofhuman epidermal growth factor in them. Twenty normal skinbiopsies obtained during surgical operations were utilized in thiswork. These specimens were divided into two main groups: A andB.
Group A: Comprised ten specimens from the trunk and limbs foreccrine sweat glands study.
Group B: Comprised ten specimens from the axillary and pubic skinfor apocrine sweat gland study.
Skin samples were fixed in neutral buffered formalin for 48 hand processed according to routine processing procedures. Sectionsof 5 hum thickness were obtained and stained with: Haematoxylinand Eosin to study the general structure of sweat glands, Masson’strichrome to study the collagenous connective tissue around themand PAS for detection of glycogen and mucopolysaccharide.Sections were immunohistochemically stained for localization ofepidermal growth factor.
The results of examination of the eccrine sweat glands sectionsrevealed that the eccrine glands were composed of secretory portionand duct portion. The secretory portions were formed of a singlelayer of secretory cells. Myoepithelial cells were found between the secretory cells and its basement membrane. Two types of secretorycells were observed; clear cells and dark cells. The secretory portionwas surrounded by thick collagenous connective tissue sheath.
