Abstract
Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to levelop and use a subsurface irrigation—fertilization
?Ystem for growing squash and soybean crops in sandy
‘balcareous soils. Several preliminary studies were made establish the most suitable design of the irrigation
[lYstem. These included testing of: diameter of lateral
rh15 diameter of orifice opening, orifices spacing and osition on the lateral tubes, length of lateral lines,
ater—head pressure, depth of lateral lines in the soil nd the time periods and intervals of irrigation.
Thereafter, two field experiments were carried out in iWo consecutive seasons at El—Ghoriab Experimental farm of ssiut University. Two test crops: squash and soybean were ron using the predetermined design of the irrigation ystem. Experitnents included four irrigation systems as ollows: subsurface irrigation every one, two and three iys and surface irrigation (as control). These were ombined with four treatments of fertilization with phos— torus and/or iron. Fertilizers were applied in a solution rtn along with irrigation water and in two rates: 30 or i kg P205/feddan and 30 or 60 ppm of Fe in The soil janted with squash and 3 or 6 ppm Fe in the soil planted Ith soybean. The experimental soil was sandy caloareous no salinity or alkalinity problenE.
