Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of children with bronchial asthma on inhaled corticosteriod drugs. 30 asthmatic (15 acute and 15 chronic ) children were involved in the present study. Their age ranged from 7-10 years and were treated for bronchial asthma in the pediatric department at the university hospital in Beni Suif. 15 non asthmatics (control group) were involved in the study, having the same age range.
Weights, heights, SFT, MAC, MAMC and diet history were assessed. Laboratory testing for total protein, albumin, cholesterol, HDL-C , LDL-C , triglycerides, creatinine , uric acid and Hb were determined. Nutrition education information on healthy food selection and exclusion of foods that triggers asthma provided to care givers was provided. The results revealed that family income had a a great effect on energy and nutrient intake. There was a significant difference in levels of triglycerids,T-cholesterol and LDL cholesterol among the studied groups with the lowest values for the non-asthmatic children. chronic asthmatics had higher levels of cholesterol, triglycerids and LDL-c than did the acute asthmatics. HDL-c levels were quiet similar in all the studied groups.
Glucocorticoide drugs might be responsible for the elevated blood lipid values.
