Abstract

Three ex-D3riments were conducted at Shendweel, Uiper Tigypt, during 1971 and 1972 seasons to study the effects O irrigationq planting date and storage of mother bulbs on the growth and seed yield of onions.
The first eeriment showed that the increase of irrigation Level from 20 to 60% F,C. resulted in v’corresponding increase in dry weights of mother—bulb, seed—stalks and seed— heads per plant as well as number of seed—stalks per plant and total seed yield per feddan. Abigher irrigation level (80% FGCS) promoted o.verge seed weight and was of no marked effect on other chara.otors, compared with tho lower level of irrigation (60% FQC.).
In the second experiment the effect of planting date was studied using two oultivars namely Giza 6 and. Behairi • The results showed the following:
1— Plantings of Nov. 1 and Dec. 1 favoured seed—head production compared with earlier (Oct. 1) or later (Jon. 1) dates:.
2— Delay of planting date beyond Nov. 1 decreased total seed yield. The decrease was proportional to the delay in planting date and was due to a smaller number of seed— heads per plant.
