Abstract A 2—year experiment was carried out at Assiut to study the effect of four planting dates and four cold storage durations of “seed” bulbs on growth, yield, quality and maturity of Egyptian garlic. “Seed” bulbs of “El—Baladi” cultivar were stored at ± 10°C for 0, 15, 30 and 60 days before planting on September 1, September 20, October 10 and November 1. Results can be summarized in the following: 1. Earlier planting, i.e. September 1 or September 20 reduced percent total germinetion, delayed emergence and had a depressing effect on plant stand. In all planting dates, the north side of the ridge showed better germination and quicker emergence than the ___ — — — south side .__ 2. With “seed” cloves kept in common storage (0 day cold treatment), earlier planting favoured foliage growth before bulbing and resulted in an increase in total and exportable yields. This was accompanied by larger mean values of bulb weight, bulb diameter, ni.m’iber of cloves per bulb and clove weight. Bulbing was not influenced by planting date whereas earlier planting resulted in earlier maturity dates. Percentage of rough bulbs was decreased by earlier planting. 4 |
