Abstract The inheritance of six cowpea traits was studied in some crosses between the Sudani, Azmirli and Fitrelat parents. These studies included the F1, F2 and. F3 gener— at ions. 1. Pod constrictedness : The inflated pod character of the Sudani parent was governed by one gene, dominant to that controlling the constricted pod of both Aztnirli and Fitreiat parents. 2. Pod colour : Pod colour was Inherited on a simple Mendelian basis. The drab pod colour of the Sudani parent was dominant over the straw pod colour of both the Azmirli and Fitreiat parents. 3. Seed shape : Seed shape of the Sudarii parent was nearly completely dominant over that of both. the Azmirli and Fitreiat parents. The continuous variation in seed shape in the F2 and F3 generaticns Indicated multiple factor inheritances Two factor pairs were postulated for the seed shape difference between the Sud.ani and both. the Azmirli and Fitreiat b parents. |
