Abstract

Six large scale I–section wall models were tested under combined action of a constant axial load and reversal horizontal increased loading till failure. The present study has investigated the effects of some parameters such as, the height – to – width ratio, the compressive concrete strength, and the variation of main flexure reinforcement ratio on the behavior of high strength concrete shear walls. The obtained experimental results helped to identify the causes of wall failure mode and have demonstrated that the concepts underlying current codes such as Egyptian Code 2001 and ACI Code 318 – 95 Shear Strength forms. The experimental results included the determination of ultimate load, deflection, mode of failure, crack pattern, ductility, stiffness, and absorption of energy.A comparison was made with other literature studies which used the conventional analysis of the reinforced concrete section subjected to axial compression and uniaxial bending Moment. The experimental results obtained were acceptable with these results which obtained from previous literature studies. A comparison was also made with the failure loads predicted by the current Egyptian Code 2001 and by ACI 318 – 95 Code. The predicted failure loads which are given according to ACI 318 – 95 Code were in good agreement to the measured failure load, but some variation were observed for the results obtained from the Egyptian Code 2001.
